Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a web search engine ‘s unpaid results—often referred to as “natural”, ” organic “, or “earned” results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users; these visitors can then be converted into customers. [1] SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search , video search , academic search , [2] news search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. SEO differs from local search engine optimisation in that the latter is focused on optimizing a business’ online presence so that its web pages will be displayed by search engines when a user enters a local search for its products or services. The former instead is more focused on national searches.   As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work, what people search for, the actual search terms or keywords typed into search engines and which search engines are preferred by their targeted audience. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content, HTML , and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks , or inbound links, is another SEO tactic. By May 2015, mobile search had surpassed desktop search. [3] Google is developing and pushing mobile search as the future in all of its products. In response, many brands are beginning to take a different approach to their internet strategies. [4]   Site owners recognized the value of a high ranking and visibility in search engine results, creating an opportunity for both white hat and black hat SEO practitioners. According to industry analyst Danny Sullivan , the phrase “search engine optimization” probably came into use in 1997. Sullivan credits Bruce Clay as one of the first people to popularize the term. [6] On May 2, 2007, [7] Jason Lambert attempted to trademark the term SEO by convincing the Trademark Office in Arizona [8] that SEO is a “process” involving manipulation of keywords and not a “marketing service.”   Companies that employ overly aggressive techniques can get their client websites banned from the search results. In 2005, the Wall Street Journal reported on a company, Traffic Power , which allegedly used high-risk techniques and failed to disclose those risks to its clients. [14] Wired magazine reported that the same company sued blogger and SEO Aaron Wall for writing about the ban. [15] Google’s Matt Cutts later confirmed that Google did in fact ban Traffic Power and some of its clients. [16]   Some search engines have also reached out to the SEO industry, and are frequent sponsors and guests at SEO conferences, chats, and seminars. Major search engines provide information and guidelines to help with site optimization. [17] [18] Google has a Sitemaps program to help webmasters learn if Google is having any problems indexing their website and also provides data on Google traffic to the website. [19] Bing Webmaster Tools provides a way for webmasters to submit a sitemap and web feeds, allows users to determine the crawl rate, and track the web pages index status.   By 2004, search engines had incorporated a wide range of undisclosed factors in their ranking algorithms to reduce the impact of link manipulation. In June 2007, The New York Times’ Saul Hansell stated Google ranks sites using more than 200 different signals. [24] The leading search engines, Google , Bing , and Yahoo , do not disclose the algorithms they use to rank pages. Some SEO practitioners have studied different approaches to search engine optimization, and have shared their personal opinions. [25] Patents related to search engines can provide information to better understand search engines. [26]   In 2007, Google announced a campaign against paid links that transfer PageRank. [28] On June 15, 2009, Google disclosed that they had taken measures to mitigate the effects of PageRank sculpting by use of the nofollow attribute on links. Matt Cutts , a well-known software engineer at Google, announced that Google Bot would no longer treat nofollowed links in the same way, in order to prevent SEO service providers from using nofollow for PageRank sculpting. [29] As a result of this change the usage of nofollow leads to evaporation of PageRank. In order to avoid the above, SEO engineers developed alternative techniques that replace nofollowed tags with obfuscated Javascript and thus permit PageRank sculpting. Additionally several solutions have been suggested that include the usage of iframes , Flash and Javascript. [30]   SEO techniques can be classified into two broad categories: techniques that search engines recommend as part of good design, and those techniques of which search engines do not approve. The search engines attempt to minimize the effect of the latter, among them spamdexing . Industry commentators have classified these methods, and the practitioners who employ them, as either white hat SEO, or black hat SEO. [46] White hats tend to produce results that last a long time, whereas black hats anticipate that their sites may eventually be banned either temporarily or permanently once the search engines discover what they are doing. [47]   An SEO technique is considered white hat if it conforms to the search engines’ guidelines and involves no deception. As the search engine guidelines [17] [18] [48] are not written as a series of rules or commandments, this is an important distinction to note. White hat SEO is not just about following guidelines, but is about ensuring that the content a search engine indexes and subsequently ranks is the same content a user will see. White hat advice is generally summed up as creating content for users, not for search engines, and then making that content easily accessible to the spiders, rather than attempting to trick the algorithm from its intended purpose. White hat SEO is in many ways similar to web development that promotes accessibility, [49] although the two are not identical.   Black hat SEO attempts to improve rankings in ways that are disapproved of by the search engines, or involve deception. One black hat technique uses text that is hidden, either as text colored similar to the background, in an invisible div , or positioned off screen. Another method gives a different page depending on whether the page is being requested by a human visitor or a search engine, a technique known as cloaking .   Another category sometimes used is grey hat SEO . This is in between black hat and white hat approaches where the methods employed avoid the site being penalised however do not act in producing the best content for users, rather entirely focused on improving search engine rankings.   SEO is not an appropriate strategy for every website, and other Internet marketing strategies can be more effective like paid advertising through pay per click (PPC) campaigns, depending on the site operator’s goals. Search engine marketing (SEM) , is practice of designing, running, and optimizing search engine ad campaigns. Its difference from SEO is most simply depicted as the difference between paid and unpaid priority ranking in search results. Its purpose regards prominence more so than relevance; website developers should regard SEM with the utmost importance with consideration to PageRank visibility as most navigate to the primary listings of their search. [52] A successful Internet marketing campaign may also depend upon building high quality web pages to engage and persuade, setting up analytics programs to enable site owners to measure results, and improving a site’s conversion rate . [53] In November 2015, Google released a full 160 page version of its Search Quality Rating Guidelines to the public, [54] which now shows a shift in their focus towards “usefulness” and mobile search .   SEO may generate an adequate return on investment . However, search engines are not paid for organic search traffic, their algorithms change, and there are no guarantees of continued referrals. Due to this lack of guarantees and certainty, a business that relies heavily on search engine traffic can suffer major losses if the search engines stop sending visitors. [55] Search engines can change their algorithms, impacting a website’s placement, possibly resulting in a serious loss of traffic. According to Google’s CEO, Eric Schmidt, in 2010, Google made over 500 algorithm changes – almost 1.5 per day. [56] It is considered wise business practice for website operators to liberate themselves from dependence on search engine traffic. [57]   In addition to accessibility in terms of web crawlers (addressed above), user web accessibility has become increasingly important for SEO.   Optimization techniques are highly tuned to the dominant search engines in the target market. The search engines’ market shares vary from market to market, as does competition. In 2003, Danny Sullivan stated that Google represented about 75% of all searches. [58] In markets outside the United States, Google’s share is often larger, and Google remains the dominant search engine worldwide as of 2007. [59] As of 2006, Google had an 85–90% market share in Germany. [60] While there were hundreds of SEO firms in the US at that time, there were only about five in Germany. SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is the name given to activity that attempts to improve search engine rankings.   Search Engine Optimisation or SEO is the simple activity of ensuring a website can be found in search engines for words and phrases relevant to what the site is offering. In many respects it’s simply quality control for websites. Having said that, if there was ever an industry that was little understood by outsiders it’s SEO.   Ask some SEO companies about SEO and they’ll try and blind you with science and confuse you into thinking it’s a black art. Say to some companies what is SEO and two hours later you’ll be none the wiser. Not so here at Red Evolution. We love seeing the light bulb go on when our clients get it. We prefer our clients to not only know what we are doing for them, but why!


SEO.   The reality is, SEO isn’t rocket science. Some gurus would have you believe it takes years of dedicated study to understand it, but I don’t think that’s true. Sure, mastering the subtle nuances takes time, but the truth is that you can learn the fundamentals in just a few minutes.   It’s a long one, to be sure, but after years of studying SEO and working behind the scenes to help companies get first page rankings, I’m convinced this is all you need to know. If you are looking to boost your traffic so that you can increase your sales, just follow these basic guidelines.   The Traffic Trap (and How SEO Really Works)   Lots of marketers make the mistake of seeing SEO only as a source of free traffic. It’s true, free traffic is the end result, but it’s not how SEO works.   The real purpose of SEO is to help people who are looking for you find you. To do that, you have to match the content on your website to what people are trying to find.   The lesson here: if you want SEO to work for you, you need to make sure your goals match the goals of your visitors. It’s not about traffic. It’s about figuring out what you want, and then optimizing for keywords that bring in visitors who want the same things.   If SEO is only a small part of your strategy, however, go with something more unique. A decade ago, no one was searching for “Google,” but now it’s a huge brand. The same goes for sites like Zappos and Zillow.   URLs are another important but often overlooked part of SEO.   Other SEOs also talk about no-following internal links, such as to their terms of service, but PageRank sculpting does not work anymore. If you want to block pages such as your terms of service, the best way to do this is to exclude it in your robots.txt file .   Links are maybe the most important part of SEO. The more websites that link to your website, the higher your web pages will rank.   The reason links have a high value in SEO is that it is easy for anyone to do research, modify their content, or create content, but is hard to convince hundreds or thousands of websites to link to you. In the eyes of a search engine, the more trustworthy, non-spammy sites are linking to you, the more authority you must have on the topic.   It’s not just smart SEO. It’s what search engines want you to do.


A Simple Step by Step Guide to SEO   When it comes to search engine optimization for a new website, some businesses can be intimidated due to the amount of information out there.  And often, if they don’t have the help of an experienced in-house SEO or consultant, they will do nothing.   Today, we’re going to look at some easy things you can do to start your website’s SEO on the right foot – even if you can’t hire a professional to help you out.   1. On-Site SEO Basics   Before we get started, one thing you want to keep in mind when using any of the following SEO elements is not to overdo it.  You might be tempted to shove a lot of keywords onto your pages, but that is not the goal.  In fact, Google has unleashed an over-optimization penalty that targets websites that have too many keywords stuffed onto one page.  So when it comes to keyword optimization, keep it simple – think of up to five keywords or keyword phrases for each page on your website and optimize for those.   If you use WordPress on your own domain, you are in luck.  Adding title tags and meta descriptions to your pages is easy using free plugins such as All in One SEO , Platinum SEO , and SEO by Yoast .  You can also get SEO suggestions by using premium plugins such as Scribe SEO .   While the title tag and the meta description are the most important SEO elements, they are not the only ones.  Be sure to incorporate the following into your website’s page content for further search optimization.   Image Name & ALT Tags – If you use images on your website, you should think of good keywords for both the image name and the alt tag.  On the first image within the post, we use <img src=”on-site-search-optimization-seo-title-tag.png” alt=”On-Site Search Optimization SEO Title Tag” /> as the goal is to optimize it for the keywords on-site search optimization.  This helps search engines find good images for their image search based on the keywords specified.   Link building is probably one of the most talked about (and debated about) SEO tasks.  The basic goal of link building is to get other websites to link to yours.  If you think about ranking at the top of search results as a popularity contest, then links are like votes saying your website deserves to be ranked highly.  Getting links with keyword anchor text will help you rank specifically for the keywords that are linked to.  For example, Adobe Reader ranks number one for the keywords click here because so many websites linked to it using the anchor text click here to download Adobe Reader.   Speaking of creating social profiles for links, if your goal is to dominate Google, then you should make sure you join Google+ .  Google’s own social network can help you rank better in search results for people you are connected with.  For example, when I’m logged in to Google+ and I search for SEO, I get the following in my top five search results.  Personalized search results based on who I am friends with are marked by the little person icon.   Last, but not least, you will want to keep track of your SEO progress by monitoring your results.  The two most important tools you can use to monitor these results are the following.   Google Analytics – Use Google Analytics to learn more about the visitors to your website.  In particular, monitor your organic search traffic sources to see what keywords people are using to find your website in search results.  By setting up goals , you can see which keywords lead to visits where visitors do what you want them to do on your website such as sign up for a mailing list or purchase a product.  This will help you learn what keywords you should be targeting with your SEO campaign.   There are a lot of other valuable SEO tools out there, but these are the best ones to start with to help you learn more about whether your SEO efforts are making a difference.

If you have an article about how to make vegan lasagna, you want the search engine (which, in 90% of all cases, is Google), to show it as a top result to anyone who searches for the phrase “vegan lasagna.”   SEO is the magic you have to work on your article, in order to make Google very likely to include your article as one of the top results whenever someone searches for that keyword.   Now that you have an idea of the basics of SEO, I’ll take a look at some of its components in detail.   But first, I need to get one thing straight. There are 2 sides of the SEO force, and you need to choose yours, right now.   If you want to work SEO like a get-rich-quick scheme, you’ll probably end up doing what’s called black hat SEO.   This type of SEO focuses on optimizing your content only for the search engine, not considering humans at all. Since there are lots of ways to bend and break the rules to get your sites to rank high, these are a welcome way for black hat SEOs to make a few thousand dollars fast.   White hat SEO, on the other hand, is the way to build a sustainable online business. If you do SEO this way, you’ll focus on your human audience, trying to give them the best content possible and making it easily accessible to them, by playing according to the search engine’s rules.   Cleaning inside your house and outside: On-Page SEO vs. Off-Page SEO   There are 2 broader categories of SEO: on-page SEO and off-page SEO.   On-page SEO concerns all of Google’s ranking factors that are determined by directly looking at the page you try to optimize, such as headlines, content and page structure.   Off-page SEO refers to all variables Google takes a look at, which are not exclusively in your own hands, but depend on other sources, such as social networks, other blogs in your industry and the personal history of the searcher.   They’re different, but you need to get both right, in order to do well with SEO.   It’s the same if your page is super optimized around on-page SEO, has great content and looks stunning, but no one gives you credit for it or points to your page.   Turn things around and they look similar: Having a neatly mowed lawn will attract plenty of people to come visit your house, but if your living room reminds your guests of a war zone, they’ll leave quicker than you can pronounce SEO.   On-Page SEO   There are 3 big categories in on-page SEO, that you’ll need to take a look at. The first and most important, is content.   This means your number one job, to do well with SEO, is to produce great content.   SEO is no different than any other skill – the great results will always come from big effort.   Just like the best marketing in the world won’t help you sell a bad product, super advanced SEO will be useless if you’re content plain sucks.   While the times where just delivering the best quality content would make you stand out from the crowd are long gone, it is still the starting point for any successful SEO effort (and online business, really).   Out of all on-page SEO factors, this is the one you should spend the most time learning. You don’t even need to buy a book, Backlinko’s definitive guide to keyword research will do.   Matt Cutts, former head of Google’s spam team and often public voice for the latest in SEO and algorithm changes, announced last year that people who were cutting the jargon would be right on track.   That’s why detailed guides and long how-to’s  have become more and more popular. So make sure you clear up your writing , fancy buzzwords and complex sentence constructions will neither make you sound smart nor help your SEO game.   Meta descriptions are what shows up as an excerpt when Google displays your page as a result to searchers. It’s easy to spot who’s done their SEO homework and who hasn’t by the meta description:   Not only do they help format and structure your content and give your readers easy reference points, but they also affect SEO.   Compared to your h1-tags, h2, h3, h4 and further subheads have less SEO power, but still matter and should therefore be used .   The third and last part of on-page SEO, that I’ll cover, is site architecture. While this part gets super-techy, super fast, there are a few simple things everyone can and should take care of, to improve SEO rankings.   Re-posting your content on other websites or publishing your guest posts again on your own site, doesn’t hurt your SEO, unless you do it the wrong (spammy) way .   Including your targeted keywords in the URLs of your blog posts is a can’t miss . You shouldn’t squander those SEO points.   Both of them work and are worth considering , even if they won’t up your SEO game too much.   Pro tip:  You can save a lot of on-page SEO by using a tool.  For example, if your blog is a WordPress site, Yoast SEO will help you with many of the important on-page elements we just discussed.   Off-Page SEO   Alright, time to step outside your house and take a look at the front yard. I’ll now show you 4 big areas of off-page SEO.   They’re only a part of SEO, just like all the other areas I covered already. There are plenty of ways to get backlinks .   The third category of off-page SEO, that’s worth taking a look at, is personal factors . While most of these are out of your control, there are a few things you can do to increase your chances of reaching a certain audience.   Lastly, let’s take a look at the social factors of off-page SEO. Besides social signals directly from the searcher, there are other ways good results on social media will help you rank better.   As with the quality of backlinks, who shares matters more than how often. Google recognizes influencers and when they share your content that share has more SEO juice than your neighbor’s.   Don’t worry if you’ve already made some SEO decisions in the past that might not have been the perfect choice.
